Products Description

The professional choice of silicone oil for room spray products.

Cyclomethicone is a clear, odourless cosmetic-grade silicone. It is non-greasy and evaporates quickly, making it ideal for use as a base in room and linen mists, as well as in cosmetic products.

Cyclomethicone is a versatile silicone compound widely used in personal care ,home fragrances, and cosmetic products due to its unique properties.

 Properties of Cyclomethicone

  •  Low Viscosity: Cyclomethicone has a very light, non-greasy feel, making it ideal for use in products where a non-oily finish is desired.
  • Volatility: It evaporates quickly after application, which means it doesn't leave a residue, making it excellent for use in lightweight formulations.
  •  Compatibility: It is compatible with a wide range of oils, making it a good carrier for fragrance oils, essential oils, and active ingredients in formulations.

In  Fragrance Products:  Room and Linen Sprays:

Cyclomethicone is an excellent carrier for fragrance oils, enabling a fine mist that disperses evenly and evaporates quickly, leaving behind the scent.

In Perfume Bases: It is used as a base for alcohol-free perfumes, allowing the fragrance to linger on the skin without an oily feel.

How to use

 Tips for Formulation:

  • With Fragrance Oils: When using Cyclomethicone as a carrier for fragrance oils, it’s often recommended to start with a 5-10% fragrance oil concentration, depending on the desired strength.

  • - Mixing: Cyclomethicone can be easily mixed with other silicones, oils, and emollients, making it a flexible ingredient in many formulations.
    - Application: Due to its volatility, Cyclomethicone should be used in formulations where quick evaporation is desired, leaving behind the active ingredients or fragrance.

 Safety Considerations:
- Cyclomethicone is generally considered safe for use in home fragrance spray, perfumes, cosmetics and personal care products, but it’s always good practice to conduct patch tests, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

FORMULATIONS

Dry Oil Body Spray: Mix with EO or FO in ratios of 1:5 to 1:6 or greater. *Be sure to use a body safe FO. Also, depending upon strength of FO/EO, concentrations may be much higher than 1:6 as your perfume may be very strong. (concentrations = FO:Cyclomethicone). If desired, first experiment with drops of FO/EO to test strength.

Dry Oil Perfume base: Mix as above and package in a roll on bottle!

After Bath Oil/Shower Body Oil: Mix with your favorite oil blend in concentrations up to 50/50 and add FO or EO to desired strength. Spray on skin after getting out of bath or shower, and then towel dry. Leaves skin silky & velvety without being greasy.

Room Sprays, Linen Sprays: No more wet linens! Please test on any linens to make sure the FO/EO doesn't stain.

Lotions: Add to lotions, body butters, lotion bars, and creams to impart a decadent silky, soft velvety feeling! Add up to 1% to pre-made lotion base or 5%-20% to lotion made from scratch.

Bath Salts, Bath Oils, and Scrubs: Add to bath oils or use instead of glycerin to add sheen to your bath salts and a silky feel to the bath water.

Hair Care: Spray on wet hair for detangling or spray on dry hair to manage "frizz". Spraying on dry hair adds extra shine too! Add to hair conditioners to give it detangling properties and a silky feel.

- It is important to note that while Cyclomethicone is a synthetic ingredient, it is non-toxic, non-irritating, and biodegradable.

Environmental Impact:
- Cyclomethicone is classified as a volatile silicone, meaning it breaks down in the environment without leaving harmful residues.

However, there is ongoing research into the environmental impact of silicones, so it’s essential to stay informed about best practices for use and disposal.

Cyclomethicone's lightweight, non-greasy nature makes it a valuable ingredient across a wide range of beauty and personal care products, adding both functionality and an enhanced sensory experience.

Please note: Cyclomethicone is a colourless liquid. Many of our fragrance oils are not colourless and may have a red or yellow tint. We would like to remind customers that when fragrance oils are mixed with Cyclomethicone this will cause the colour to change and we, therefore, recommend that if you are using this base to spray fabrics etc, it may cause staining. Please test your finished product to make sure that your spray does not cause staining. If sprayed in a room with wooden floors or tiles it may cause them to become slippery so please be cautious.

We recommend that you carry out your own tests, as results may vary depending on individual recipes. It is the customer's responsibility to test for compatibility before proceeding with manufacture.

Why Choose Cyclomethicone

Cyclomethicone is particularly well-suited for use in home sprays, such as room and linen mists, due to several unique properties that offer distinct advantages over water- or alcohol-based formulations:

Advantages of Cyclomethicone in Home Sprays:

1. Quick Evaporation:
   - Non-Staining: Cyclomethicone evaporates rapidly after being sprayed, which minimizes the risk of staining fabrics or surfaces. This makes it ideal for use on delicate linens, upholstery, and other home textiles.
   - No Residue: Unlike water- or alcohol-based sprays that can leave a damp or sticky residue, Cyclomethicone evaporates completely, leaving behind only the fragrance.

2. Enhanced Fragrance Longevity:
   - Superior Fragrance Delivery: Cyclomethicone is an excellent carrier for fragrance oils, allowing the scent to be dispersed evenly and effectively. The fragrance molecules remain suspended in the air or on surfaces longer, which can enhance the longevity of the scent compared to water or alcohol bases.
   - Controlled Scent Release: Because Cyclomethicone evaporates gradually, it helps in slowly releasing the fragrance, offering a more prolonged and consistent scent experience in a room.

3. Silky Finish:
   - Smooth Application: When sprayed on fabrics or skin, Cyclomethicone leaves a silky, smooth finish without any wet or greasy feel. This is particularly beneficial for linen sprays, where you want to avoid any wet spots that could potentially damage delicate fabrics.
   - Non-Tacky Feel: It doesn’t leave a sticky or tacky residue, which can be an issue with water or alcohol bases, particularly on hard surfaces or skin.

4. No Alcoholic Odor:
   - Odorless Carrier: Cyclomethicone is virtually odorless, meaning it won’t interfere with or alter the intended scent of your fragrance oils. In contrast, alcohol-based sprays often have a strong initial smell that can compete with or alter the fragrance until the alcohol evaporates ( That will not happen in our own solution )

5. Non-Flammable:
   - Safety: Unlike alcohol-based sprays, Cyclomethicone is non-flammable, making it safer to use, especially in settings where there might be open flames, such as near candles or fireplaces.

6. Gentle on Fabrics and Skin:
   - Non-Irritating: Cyclomethicone is non-irritating and non-drying, making it safe for use on skin and fabrics. Alcohol, on the other hand, can be drying and harsh, potentially irritating sensitive skin or causing fabrics to become brittle over time.
   - Preservation of Fabric Quality: Because it evaporates without wetting the fabric, it reduces the risk of damage to sensitive materials that could be affected by repeated exposure to moisture or alcohol.

 Comparison to Water/Alcohol-Based Sprays:
  • 100% Water-Based Sprays: While water is a common base for home sprays, it can leave fabrics damp, potentially leading to issues like staining, water spots, or even mold growth if not properly ventilated. Water-based sprays may also have a shorter fragrance lifespan, as water evaporates quickly, sometimes carrying the scent away with it.
    - 100% Alcohol-Based Sprays: Alcohol is another popular base, known for its quick evaporation and ability to dissolve oils. However, it can leave a noticeable odor upon application, is flammable, and can dry out both fabrics and skin. Moreover, alcohol can sometimes affect the integrity of delicate fabrics, leading to discoloration or damage over time.

In summary, Cyclomethicone offers a range of benefits that make it superior to water or alcohol bases for home sprays. Its quick evaporation, non-staining properties, and ability to enhance and prolong fragrance make it an excellent choice for creating high-quality, effective room and linen mists.

Chemistry

Cosmetic silicones are chemically known as siloxanes which are compounds made up of silicon (Si), oxygen (O), and various organic groups attached to the silicon atoms. The basic structural unit of a silicone is the siloxane bond, which consists of a chain of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms (Si-O-Si).

 Chemical Structure:
- Silicon-Oxygen Backbone (Si-O-Si): The backbone of silicones is a repeating unit of silicon and oxygen atoms, forming a chain or network. This backbone gives silicones their unique flexibility and stability.

- Organic Side Groups: Attached to the silicon atoms are organic groups, such as methyl (CH₃) or phenyl groups. The most common organic group is the methyl group, leading to the term "polydimethylsiloxane" (PDMS), which is a widely used silicone in cosmetics.

The basic structural unit of a silicone is the siloxane bond, which consists of a chain of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms (Si-O-Si).

Examples of Cosmetic Silicones:

  1. Dimethicone:

    • Chemical Formula: (C2H6O)nSiO)n\text{(C}_2\text{H}_6\text{O)}_n\text{SiO)}_n
    • A linear silicone polymer with methyl groups attached to the silicon atoms.
  2. Cyclopentasiloxane:

    • Chemical Formula: (C5H10O)5Si5\text{(C}_5\text{H}_{10}\text{O)}_5\text{Si}_5
    • A cyclic silicone with a ring structure, consisting of five silicon and five oxygen atoms, each silicon atom having two methyl groups.
  3. Cyclohexasiloxane:

    • Chemical Formula: (C6H12O)6Si6\text{(C}_6\text{H}_{12}\text{O)}_6\text{Si}_6
    • Similar to cyclopentasiloxane but with a six-membered ring structure.
  Properties:
- Inertness: Silicones are chemically inert, meaning they don't easily react with other substances, which makes them stable and safe for use on skin and hair.
- Hydrophobicity: The organic groups attached to the silicon atoms make silicones hydrophobic, meaning they repel water, which contributes to their water-resistant properties.
- Flexibility: The Si-O bond is longer and more flexible than a typical carbon-carbon bond, giving silicones their unique fluidity and elasticity.

These chemical characteristics are what make silicones versatile and widely used in the cosmetic industry.
